Where should I visit for a US holiday?

OK, so I'm really itching to go abroad this year (2005) and I'd love to see America again... I saw Syracuse and Watertown... and that's really about it.

Anyone got any recommends where a Brit should spend his money and his time and why? Science, architecture, history and culture are good reasons to visit a place as are pretty girls, sunshine and classic cars, You got any of that over there? :D

Many kind thanks in advance :)

Go west young man, see the Badlands, the Grand Canyon, Mt. Rushmore, Yellowstone Park, San Francisco if you have the time.

San Francisco has gotta be a lure - the Haight Ashbury, Grateful Dead, Janice Joplin, one of the first courses in MSR... wasn't Hendrix from around there, Anthony?

I left my heart in San Francisco, I never went there, but hit LA about 35 years ago when a kid could still walk down the sidewalk for a piece of pizza alone.

Jimi Hendrix was from Seattle, WA

Paul Allen co-founder of M$ is Hendrix fan # 1 as he started his own Jimi Hendrix hall of fame, put millions into it also.

The Badlands and the Grand Canyon would be a better thing than seeing any big city though.

    http://www.nps.gov/badl/exp/home.htm

Check out the link and do a search on the Badlands and Grand Canyon and post any other links you find.

These are some great places and a once in a life time thing to visit, Hoover dam is also something to see.

The west is where it is at in American sightseeing Lever.

PS:::: Lever, it is the middle of WINTER TIME, so you should not even visit until June or July unless you are going to visit South Florida, Hawaii or Southern California :)

I like your response, Anthony. As the song says, "From the mountains, to the praries, to the oceans white with foam ..." We have it all. I have had the pleasure of walking for miles on Padre Island and never seeing a sole (can't do that now), spending a week in a broken down bus in Capulin, NM population 65, visiting Mt. Capulin in the evenings and watching the deer come out and feed, visiting cliff dwellings, seeing heard of Elk, ... I love having the opprotunity of observing nature.

Good luck in your hunt for a vacation.

    Shannon

The heat of the South in the summer is something to avoid. Fall and Spring are probably better times to visit all parts of the US.

Smyrl, you would know about hot weather in Texas.

The worst hot and humid weather I ever got stuck in was in McAllen, Texas when I was looking at industrial sites years ago for a business relocation in that boarder town to Mexico.

It is a boom town as a lot of companies have twin locations, manufacturing in Mexico and an office facility across the boarder in the USA.

But Lever, she is correct, after March it starts getting hot again in Florida and Texas.

But I still say the best time to travel is after winter time is over in May if you are on a tour.

You do not want to get stuck in an airport as Millions did because of the snowfall during the holiday here. Worst yet, if you break down or get stuck in a blizzard, you could freeze to death and that would not make a great vacation.

Nice link AC, http://www.nps.gov/ is one to explore, thx. Looks like u got a lot of wilderness over there :D

Mmm, Hendrix from Seattle, WA, wasn't Kurt Cobain from that way too? Why does Aberdeen stick in my mind other than that's my Scottish birthplace? Isn't Frasier Crane a Seattle man - I love that program...

Hoover Dam... I know someone who took a photo there and immortalised the "Oover Da" in 35mm... is that anywhere near the Grand Canyon? As for Badlands... that's got some history; there was a "Badlands" comic strip over here and I have a "Badland" friend too (Hi 'chelle xxx)

So, what about my expectations of Miami (aka Miami Vice), Massacheusetts & New England, the big Apple, Vegas & the stratosphere, Salt Lake City, is Kansas "no place like home"? After 20 years the Patriots won something (twice :D) an now Redsox are winners... is New England cool?

SiteTutor: You're used to SanFran...would a modest UK country boy find wonder in the big city? What's the attitude really like? The hippies still there?

Shannon: Thanks for the spring/autumn tip for the deep south. I'm gonna do weekends or weeks at a time unless I can wangle some "I been working too hard a me sir boss sir" time...

You got a big country there, people. Snow, desert, mountains, plains... whatsa gonna be my lasting memory?

AC: LOL I'll tour the big country some time in a convertible car - no planes, no trains, just automobiles - and I'd make sure I did it with a BB bat in the back seat and a bulldog attitude... :)

Any other cultural/natural centres to visit?

You may find the train tour a most interesting option to be honest about it, they say you can see much more from a train than you can from the interstate highways.

Like I said, just do not travel here in the winter, you WILL NOT have any fun.

You can hit all of those places on the same tour, you can even visit the old London Bridge in Lake Havasu, I think that is where it is.

We've got it all in San Diego :D. I know you wouldn't be disappointed if you spent your holiday here. Beautiful beaches, culture, history, science, architecture, culture, entertainment, etc. etc. I would go in to it, but I'm late for the gym, so here is a link to explore:

VS is right, San Diego is one of the best towns (and the best weather in the of anyplace anywhere in the world) to visit, just take your checkbook with you!

I went there when I was about 10 years old, 35 years ago or so and thought I was in heaven.

Lever that link you gave back was the National Park services main website, from there I hit their directory of Parks and came up with this photo page from the Grand Canyon.

VS can not claim that her town has anything like this either.

    http://www.nps.gov/grca/photos/index.htm

Now can you VS  :p

San Diego like all of California is pricey. Orange County has better looking women and it's a short drive up the coast :).

It depends on what your budget is. San Diego and SF are high up there in my book, as is Boston.

Mt. Rushmore is an experience, but after a day, you won't know what to do. Incredible that they made a statue out of a mountain. You see pictures and you're like yeah, that's pretty interesting. Then you see it and your whole perspective changes.

Vegas is vegas. It can be done on the cheap, but it's much more fun to blow through 10 grand in four days.

Chicago is a great place to visit in the summer time. Tahoe is good summer or winter. Texas sucks. I don't care what anybody says. It's all flat, the people are rude, and the roads are all beltways.

Pennsylvania is good too. Actually, I would highly recommend a fall trip starting in New Hampshire, and working your way down the east coast over a week or so. It's nbelievably beautiful. Some east coasters would be able to tell you the best timing for it.

Washington DC isn't the greatest, but you could see all the giant statues and things we erected after we kicked you Brits out :). A lot of american history there - things like the Smithsonian, Lincoln Memorial, etc.

Museums: Washington or San Diego have been most impressive to me.
Girls: Orange County, San Diego. NOT San Francisco.
Scenery: East Coast in the Fall. California in the Summer.

sitetutor: LOL - I'll take some smokes with me if I go to SF then but the hot chicks of San D are calling...
Anthony: Train sounds interesting... and those Grand Canyon shots are awesome, cheers :)
Summer: Thanks for the link, some good stuff in there, I'll have to work extra hard to pay for a stay at "the Del" LOL
LasVegasHomes: Bunny Ranch? OMG. I saw Joey's photos of Vegas - looks like an exciting place but I didn't see the Bunny Ranch LOL
nevetS: Orange County - I hear there's a good chop shop up there ;) Many thanks for the info, I'm getting a feel for all these place already

Thankyou everyone, I really appreciate this :D

Thanks, Nicholas, that'll be the city of Angels on the list too. Planning will have to be good as I forgot that I promised myself to see at least a bit of le Tour in July so I reckon Spring on the Pacific Coast, Summer in France and Autumn on the Atlantic side...
