Well starting of off page totally depends on your site. You can start with as following: Step 1: participate on some relevant dofollow popular forums and get backlinks by adding signature. Step:2 Bookmark your site on popular social media sites. Step:3 Write some informative and useful articles relevant to your niche and submit them on popular article directories. Step:4 Submit your sites url on popular directories. Well this just a begining. Start the other SEO techniques like blog commenting, press release etc as your wish. Not necessary that you need to follow any trend or step by step.
Practice proper link building techniques for your site. In this way, you can easily generate traffic to your site and most importantly Backlinks.
i think, i mean this is what i do, for a new website is good to start with small links like social bookmarking > twitter and facebook (put your link in a few accounts) > make some web 2.0 properties with your link in it > some article directories. after that you can get to a more "strong" kind of backlinks directly to your main website cheers
