Yea, but then, my -main.htm page will get only a PR5 if the index.htm rises to PR6.

P.S.: and, Freewebspace, why is your PR5 Lifetime Links pointing to a page with PR0?

To be blunt and honest, you're thinking way too much about PR. There are so many other things that are much more important than PR ;)

I am taking care of the other things in the meantime, yes. But, after a year of decent effort, I could only get to a PR4. I need a quick boost now after all the effort.

You really need to either start cloaking these duplicate pages or disallowing them using robots.txt or something.

PR hardly means anything these days. A PR4 site can easily outrank a PR6 or 7 site.

Also you say you are PR4 but since PR hasn't updated since July you might be PR1 or PR8 by now.

Say you have $1000 to spend on this PR8 link. I suggest spending it at reviewme and payperpost instead. That will help your rankings.

Mad, the -cb and -pdc pages are not linked to any other page in the site. So, I don't see why I should disallow them in the robots.txt. Or should I?

And, can I use a redirect on my home page to the -main.htm page? Will this hurt anything?

    Stan.

Well, the main.htm does not seem to be indexed!?

But, I can't really stop the indexing of -pdc and -cb pages since lots of people from outside my site use it for promotion. Or can I?

But, I have heard that it is usually not a problem in that SEs don't actually penalise the sites for doing this. I forgot where I read it from though.

You can stop Google indexing content and allow others to still use it. Some people tend to have landing pages designed for search engines with lots of content along with landing pages for users with not much content.

You are correct in saying that search engines don't actually penalise for duplicate content as they just filter it. Thats fine if you have an older and more established website but for a new site with few pages indexed its very hard for Google to choose the correct version of your pages so you need to make the choice yourself.

The best solution is to use php and cookies to create different landing pages according to the link the user has passed through. If somebody clicks on www.yoursite.com/page.php?affiliate=john then set a cookie and redirect them to www.yoursite.com and show them the appropriate content for affiliate john. Another user could come from affiliate steve and see totally different content.

Using lots of similar pages when one page could do the same thing is not a good idea.

    Stanley,

Like some others have already stated, PR and SERP rankings are two totally different things. In order to rank well in a search engines, you need back links with your keywords pointing back to your site. If you are wanting to rank for how to be funny, you get links pointing back to your site with those keywords in your link. This is fairly easy since this is the name of your site. I always switch out my keywords with 3-4 different phrases to look more natural for search engines. Also to rank in SEs, you need to have the proper Key phrases in h1 and maybe an h2 and maybe a few other bits of on page optimization.

The thing you do get with PR is people are willing to buy links off of sites with higher PR. That's pretty much your only benefit with a high PR site.

Here's an SEO tutorial that I think is very well written and a lot more understandable than my explanation http://seo-guy.com/tutorial.html

Mad4, I am just off talking to my web designer.

The problem apparently is this: The CB and PDC pages could not be stopped from being indexed because both the affiliate systems are automatic. Anyone could register now and get a new link to promote in the next 5 minutes. They do not have to contact me.

If there is any other way, please let me know.

    Thanks!
    Stan.

The way I would use is to not have different pages. Instead you should dynamically alter the pages using php and cookies depending on which link you passed through.

If you web designer can't do this then I suggest employing somebody on the forums to sort it out. Send me a PM and I can probably help.
