Where is the love?

I know that this thread isn't going to make me the most popular guy on DP.

But is it me has the love of building a website been replaced by profit margins?

There are so many webmasters trying to copy old ideas (me being one of them a lot of the time, I wont lie) because they are easy money or something like that.

Now I'm exclusively building a website that I really feel attached to - I have actually been at a financial loss due to the site until recently, but through the 'rough period', I was still happy, knowing that I have a great, mostly original, website.

are there any other webmasters out there who feel the same way?

I don't think theres any harm in making a website purely for a profit at all, I mean that's what a lot of people are in the web business for these days. I do agree though that sometimes it can be just as rewarding to build a quality site that you genuinely love. I run my Entertainment site (Sig) mostly for the love of it, it's not making me huge profits and we've had some ups and downs with it but it has quality unique content and puts me in touch with some great people in the Entertainment business so that's the main reward for me. :)

I think you can usually tell which sites were made for pure profit (and so can google). they are usually the ones where the content isnt updated for weeks, if ever.

dont get me wrong i have nothing against making profit - Afterall I will almost certainly make xoog my full-time website.

Not sure but "love" certainly does not pay my bills.

    Define Irony...

It's a person who starts a thread like this; then sells banner space in another thread; and uses pop-up ads on the other site in his signature.

    Oh. That's irony.

@AdsenseChic: True but you will find that one big project that you enjoy doing is likely to earn you more money than lots of little sites simply because you are more willing to pay attention to the fine details and progress of the site. That, or a rich husband :-\

@lorien: as i explained i have been happy to be at loss for the past few months, only recently i have decided to attempt to break even and make some profit.

the popup ads will disappear as soon as the banner space alone can pay for the dedicated server i have. However in the meantime, my biggest and well-established competitor has one popunder every page, while xoog has one every 4 hours. they also have a creative with a really annoying sound on every other page :)
