Many people are trained to tune out adsense and other ads. If the goal of your website is to generate revenue, then put the ads in interspersed in text that they will be reading, close to navigation areas, etc. Be careful, however, to not violate the TOS for Adsense. Read it carefully. If you try too hard to "trick" people, you may be in violation and your account could be terminated quickly.
