(the underlined above)
I have noticed similar peculiarities with Google descriptions. In particular, they can be 1/2 the normal length. seems to be mainly for competitve keywords.

I have always noticed that they create the description from the words on your page and that they make the keywords bold.
They do that too. It has always been advised to write a good description though as you don't know where they will pull from.
