Hi I am helping a friend takeover someone elses forum, the owner doesn't want it anymore, and he's currently paying way above what he should for hosting. I have tried to get info regarding usage from the webmaster, but as yet this information is not forth coming. I'd like to move it to a shared hosting plan, but suspect this isn't powerful enough, but what i want to know is, will a VPS with 192mb of ram be enough? Stats (Rounded off) Number of posts: 450,000+ Posts per day: 450 ish Number of topics: 25,000 Topics per day: 30 Number of users: 3,000 Users per day: 5 Database size: 300 MB I know it has monthly bandwidth of just under 20GB. The trouble is, i am quite stumped on what is needed to ensure the forum continues to run smoothly. I'm now convinced it needs to be kept on a VPS, just don't know exactly what it will need to function without issue. Thanks for your help
VPS should be fine, it could even be hosted on a large plan at a shared server, but VPS would ensure that it would be running fine. - Meti
I think you should manage just fine with that amount of RAM, one more thing which forum platform is the forum being powered by? - Meti
phpBB. Is there much difference between the platforms? The forum generates no money and survives just on donations, so vB isn't an option yet! Once i've helped monetise the forum, i'll certainly suggest vB.
From my own experience phpBB seems to be easier on the resources, so it should do fine, even vB could work without any issues on that RAM. - Meti
I'd suggest more ram if you are running cpanel. Here are some good value vps web hosting plans. Andrew
