Gandi.net just finished giving away 10k free domain names in March - on their 10th birthday. Some people managed to get 5 to 10 free domains using different computers. I also got a .me.uk domain name, and since these are minimum 2 yrs registration so I got my free domain for 2 yrs. All others who got .com/net/org has got those for 1 yr - keep a watch if other reputed sellers are giving away free domain names on their company's birthdays

I suppose you can get cheap domain if you choose shared hosting plan along with registration. There are lot of web hosts who provide first year free domain along with shared package.
