lol .. most people while starting their ebusiness think that having a directory would make them good money right from day one. Come on guys, ebusiness aint that easy. Its wastage of time and energy. To be honest, even I started the same way. Downloaded the phpld script, registered a domain name at name.com, signed for hosting with Godaddy.com .. Uploaded the script, set it up and yayyyyy :D
LoL wasted 2 months in doing all that, got the adsense ads, good looking directory and no one to visit to submit sites.
Guys, forget about making good money with your directories or sites if you don't invest enough time. There is lots and lots of hard work + smart work required for the success of a website/directory.
I really hate saying this, but I wasted my first 6 months doing nothing but uploading directories and waiting for people to list their websites. I did get good number of submissions, but really, you need to do some ACTIVE marketing before you will receive some clicks on your adsense ads or you get some PAID submissions.
I mean, whats the use of adsense ads when you know that the only people who will visit your site would be the webmasters who rarely click on Adsense Ads on any website 'unless some ad is too luring'.

If you really wish to make money from your directory, learn the techniques others have been doing. DO NOT push your advertisement banners and ads from day one. I can list a few points which can help you get some recognition among webmasters:

    1. Choose a good template which is easy on a webmaster's eyes. Webmasters submit their sites to thousands of directories. They wont hesitate in closing your directory if things are messy.
    2. Keep the CAPTCHA (if you use one) image easy and simple. Do not keep the distortion level or number of letters/numbers too high.
    3. Provide proper guidelines for website submission.
    4. Approve sites quickly/fast. Don't keep the webmasters waiting for days for their sites to be approved.
    5. Advertisements (Adsense or other) are good as far as they are not annoying and do not bug a site-submitter.
    6. Provide useful images on the main page (such as SEO Friendly, approval times or anything you think may help a site submitter).
    7. Don't go asking for money from day 1 lol. You need submissions, if your directory is too new, how can you expect someone shelling out $19 when they are not even sure that your directory will exist the next day?
    8. ACTIVELY market your directory. Edit the emails that webmasters get when their submission is approved. Send them email about other sites that were approved recently. Send them other useful stuff so that your directory stands out of the crowd.
    9. Create associations among other directory owners. Include their links on your site and vice versa.
    10. Send periodical newsletters. Provide useful information, news, updates, etc. I would say, avoid any sort of advertisement in your newsletters in the beginning. Once you have good amount of sites listed on your directory, you can then start advertising products and services or even charge for a PAID submission on your directory.

This all requires lots of patience. Create a strategy to promote your directory. Be responsible person and try to prove your worth. Otherwise, you will find your directory/site among those millions other which stay at PR 0 or PR1 even after years of launch.
Check what those directory owners are doing whose directories are PR6, PR5 ...
Its only that those webmasters know what they are doing.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards.
    Andy.
