Your right, a lot of people get the impression it's fairly easy and they can rely solely on getting high SERP rankings to create a prosperous stable business.

There are more high level resources to learn it that I realized so I'm thinking of going to a broader scope. Putting together a high level guide/service/something to guide the clueless from uninformed surfer to successful webmaster of a profitable website. Of course there is a ton they have to do & learn and I cannot provide much of the information, but if I chart out their journey it could be helpful. I'm not entirely sure how to guide them through the website promotion portion. My goal is to do it with as little of my time investment as possible. I'm not sure if SEO is the best because of the high learning curve and unpredictable results. What would you recommend for either entrepreneurs without SEO knowledge or small businesses wanting a serious web-presence?

It's not seo. It's not signatures. It's not contests. It's not article marketing....

I'm afraid it's just advertising and word of mouth, Regrouping-webmaster.

It's how this site did it. It's how Craig's List did it. It's how 3 college students back in the late 90's did it when they started Askmen. It's how such blogs as Chow and Shoemoney did it.... It's how all of the now big or semi-big sites did it.

The question should be: How can someone with very little money advertise, and, get word of mouth going? But that is rarely asked here, or on other boards.

You know that's basically what my marketing teacher said about my business idea. She said that while it might be a really good and feasible idea, nobody is going to talk about it or care. I just need to find something extra cool to do (not easy), and be the first to do it (harder).

Joe, they will talk about it and care, IF you can show how one with little money or know-how can advertise, promote and they can quit their day job within 6 months.

And since it cannot be done without doing advertising, and, word of mouth....

Personally, I think showing them that, combined with showing them such examples, like how 3 college guys did it when they started Askmen.com is "extra cool."

Make it work, and then give it time.

...I personally think that is unrealistic. Unless of course your talking about quitting on the possibility that the business will be successful?

Yes, that is what I meant. I was able to quit in that time. Others it took over a year. And, of course, those who do noobie stuff like signatures, seo, article marketing, and whatnot, well, they can't quit their job, period.

I wish ya luck, man. Keep us who are interested updated. :)

    Coper12,

I find it interesting in that you list the major promotion tasks, that are free, including all the ones that site build it tells it's users to use. (SEO & article marketing works but are not reliable, quick, or easy). Being you obviously experienced enough to see people spinning their wheels how would you recommend the inexperienced promote their stuff? PPC is obviously out, or at best a side promotion.

This really is a great place but here is the key you have to follow through with the strategies and be consistent

anyone strategy can work you have to be consistent though the best is to find a cheap guide that goes over tha basics

It would take you a very large amount of time studying SEO. That's why there are agencies specialized on SEO.

Where: Google, Yahoo and Live it!, Blogsearch or This list of search engines

It is not only here in the forums but also by experience. What's in the forum and other blogger's article are just basic.

I'm not sure if you were referring to my post as I was genuinely recommending theuniversitykid.com but that is not my website. My name is in my DP username and the owner of theuniversitykid.com is Jason Pereira and he lives in Dubai.

I just said it in my other posts, Joe...it's advertising and word of mouth.

Craig Newmark knows this very fact all too well.

Why would it be out? Over the next few months keep track of webmasters who advertise on Google, MSN, Yahoo..., and you will notice many who know how to advertise, and their ads are continually up. Not including the affiliates' ads, that is.

Many don't use Google, though, because their rates are way too high, combined with too much competition.

But I will agree that it is only a small part of one's advertising campaign.
