Where does the majority of your traffic come from?

In an effort to get some valuable ideas for how to generate traffic for my sites, I would be interested to know a bit about your marketing strategy and what words. What single effort brings in the most traffic?

I run a site for college students and my biggest traffic source is stumbleupon.

    How about you?

Try out implementing similar strategy at facebook, visit your local institutions and the school/college from where you passed out, discuss your objectives of your website with the authority and get their help, try to create a local community with students.

When i first started my Mobile phone blog, i would say 80% of that was refferals from Stumble Upon and Digg. But as time passed on i started getting more organic traffic from google.

Now i'd say 90% of my traffic is google, with 10% refferals from SU and Digg.

just starting out at about 2 weeks, i have seen a few hits from google already, and a few from just link promotion, and a good chunk with people from entrecard , but most of those users are there to just drop cards on me.

We get most traffic through our widgets, around 1.4m clicks per month right now. Other traffic from Google, the odd spike from Stumbleupon then it is our blog, my own blog etc..

Thanks guys, I'm really getting a lot out of the comments! I've read a lot about article submissions as viable traffic sources but I've never really made much use of them. Facebook is another big one for me. I just am worried about oversaturating my SU account with self-stumbles so am looking for ways to branch out as well.

Could you not post a picture or something on a site such as to CollegeHumour.com? - You may not get the traffic but you would get visitors from your target market. It is important to care about traffic but concentrate more on if you can make money off of the traffic. Oh yeah and hold a contest, college kids love free stuff.

From a Blog that writes lots of "How-To" posts on design/photography/photoshop/SEO/Web Dev/ etc:

    Referring Sites (68.95%)
    Direct Traffic (19.31%)
    Search Engines (11.74%)

Most of my traffic comes from being featured on other blogs. After that, I see lots of traffic from StumbleUpon, Direct viewers (or viewers from my feed), and Google.

You are talking about quality traffic that converts, right?

    Ads in other sites.

In my line of work, (game server hosting) we tend to get a lot of our traffic from IRC. I know not all niches have irc community but having an eggdrop bot spamming ads helps a lot.

My stat's are somewhat even i think

    (42.94%) Search Engines
    (34.12%) Direct Traffic
    (22.94%) Referring Sites

I post on forums, web directories, articles and on other sites. Just takes time for the steady flow of traffic to come.

    From Google.

Most sites with good traffic (i mean, at least more than 1000 daily visitors), comes from Google.
