I was reading lately that having links in your footer isn't a good thing. I like it there because it's kinda out of the way So I was wondering were people place their referral links to other sites, like directories, on there web page? Thanks.
If it's a true referral it doesn't need to pass any kind of benefit apart from the link so I would make it dofollow to just be safe or use some js to redirect to the url. That way you can place it anywhere on your site without fear. I'm sure some webmaster were using a referral program as a way of getting homepage links but it's you taking the risk not them
Choose a specific page such as appreciation page to place this kind of links, or you can also add a listing for these sites as referral, don't try to use trick to redirect the links to a unknown place.
if you are promoting another website of yours (or others) that is related to the website that the footer is in, that is ok (i guess)... The only external footer link that i personally use is something like "this website is owned and operated by Timsar Solutions LLC" Sometimes you have to put links like "this was provided by phpLD, etc", which we jsut have to do in order to use that service,
Bottom of the page works fine. Google doesn't seem to care in my experience. My bottom of the page links rank #1 for their search terms.
