Where do you host your Joomla site?

I am wondering where everyone is hosting their sites. My host pre-installs Joomla, but then doesn't allow folders any 777 permission so I can't install a template (which is completely retarded). Therefore, I am canceling my account and going elsewhere.

    The problem is:

    media/ - Unwriteable
    administrator/templates/ - Unwriteable
    templates/ - Unwriteable
    images/stories/ - Writeable

Those directories that are not writtable apparently need to be 777 CHMOD so they become writable, but I cannot change the permissions and my host told me this wasn't possible on their servers. Is there another way to install a template? I will add you on yahoo.

Why don't you use bluehost? It's a pretty good host provider. I host my joomla site on this host too. It works great. PM me if you need more help.

Can you install extensions and components? If so install JoomlaXPlorer from the extensions area of the Joomla site. It will allow you to upload from within joomla, hopefully bypassing some of the permissions issues since it is uploading as the joomla user, not as you from an FTP program.

If that dosent work, I use x10hosting for my free stuff, they have an ad-free package. However, they do require that you log into their forums every 2 weeks to keep your site up.

I am using 1and1.com, they finally wrote me back again saying I could install Joomla myself and then I could change the permissions. However, I am still considering moving to another host just because the whole ordeal has been kind of ridiculous.

GoDaddy proved to be a joomla friendly webhost, too. Fairly easy to set up and somehow their shared hosting accounts do not require special folder permissions to be set up in order for joomla to work properly. You just upload the files, set up the database, follow the installation path and done.

i would vote for Hostmonster any time. You can install the joomla ( always updated) using fantastico . All it takes just 3 clicks. and then you can upload any theme you want from the joomla admin panel You will have full control over the control panel ,htaccess file and all those good stuff. I have messed up my site twice ( i lost database) and both time they had backup. They backup weekly and monthly and keep the most recent one. Thumbs up for them any time.
