http://www.interectory.com/ We own a PR3 directory, it now has about 1000+ entries. We have been getting about 30-50 link requests per day. We have one banner, and use bidvertiser. Up till now all submissions have been free with no recip. required. At what point should I charge for links (if any)? Should we sell banners? Should I require recip. links? Is there such a thing as too many links? We have a nice start on this directory, we need advise on what direction do we go from here. Thanks guys for any input. Ted
if your directory is free and you get arround 50-60 submissions then it's very boaring work to approve or reject link submission. Work more on links to get more pr and make this dir paid one. Other wise you are wasting your time.
also, i'd say that if you're accepting free submissions, only approve the really good quality ones. if you have too many sites approved, when you start charging for submissions, your customers who are looking for pr may decide that you've got too many links already...
Firstly, congratz on a successful directory. Secondly, I just added 2 sites to your queue. hopefully they make it Thanks, Rob
I hear you and feel your pain (bush or clinton don't remember) Howsomeever it does a good job for spam.
I'm seeing a lot of directories using that exact same captcha system (does it come with the script?). It usually takes me a couple of attempts as well, I hate it. It can't be accessible to anyone using a screen reader, and in some territories that is actually against the law. Personally I use a mostly trivia-based captcha, which I built myself. It's pretty effective, because the questions are unique to my directory. It would be nice to see a phpld mod with something similar, where each directory owner could write in their own questions.
The fact that you made the links rel=nofollow means you shouldn't attempt to charge anyone, as the links hold no value. If anyone paid for a link and then realized you were using rel=nofollow, they would probably be quite annoyed.
I agree, the most important reason a site pays for a listing is to gain a good quality inbound link. Sure, you may get a couple of visitors but not likely given that there are so many directories out there and at the end of the day, people search on search engines, not directories.
add mine first then switch to paid! hehehe just kidding! yeah! you should work on getting high pr and high traffic links... when your getting great traffic then you might start asking for money! money! money! Dude! i've submitted 2! thanks!
