I think it varies depending on what your site is about. Awhile ago, I was doing an ultra specific niche affiliate site...and almost 95% of traffic came from Google Adwords...
1) directories (for my specific niche.. they work great, not for all niches of course) 2) search engines
Google gives me 80% of my traffic now, since I'm on first page for some keywords/phrases, but it's not enough
I get traffic from as many different sources as possible. forums signatures, search engines, banner and text ads
Google for one niche...and wikipedia for another (I inserted a lot of quality, relevant links one week...and search engine traffic is too low)

When my site was new, most of the traffic used to come from my DP Sigs. Now it get most of the traffic from Sig links, links on other websites as well as from Social Bookmar Sites.
I get 80% from search engines and then 20% from other sources. Google leads the SE traffic, followed by MSN.
