Hey, I'm about to start up a new project now, and I was hoping you could answer a few questions :)

    1. Where do you look for free wordpress themes? Ie: do you just google, or are you looking on sites that you know that features themes?
    2. Is this your preferred way of finding them?
    2a If no, what is?

I don't look for free themes. Outside of the WP Theme repository and select premium designers that offer a freebie every now and then, many free themes are loaded with malware, ad scripts and other junk that make them garbage, could infect your site or the computers of your visitors.
No. I would never use a free theme on one of my own sites of for a client. It only takes one time and you will swear them off forever.

I buy themes and customize them to suit my needs. WPMUDEV, Solostream, Woo, and even Themeforest all have good, well coded and supported themes. You have to be careful on Themeforest though. They do keep a high set of standards, but there are a lot of different designers...best to read the comments and ratings to insure that all of the bugs are worked out. I've probably purchased 50 themes from there and only got 2 that I was unhappy with.

You can get decent themes from wordpress.org and edit them to your liking.
Otherwise, Google search it: Free Wordpress Themes

I stand corrected then, apparently the only way is to make it yourself because who knows if there's Base64 in any templates... Unless you use the decoder..
