I advertise mine directly in the google index. 98% of my traffic is organic google search.

Tried Google, and Yahoo with same ad. I might as well flushed my money down a toilet with google it was that good....

Currently I am running a small campaign with yahoo, and am very happy. Get about 30 hits a day from them, and about 5 become a member that same day. Sometimes it's even better, and I get a 40% join ratio...raging...At this rate I will soon be increasing my campaign funds.

You can advertise yoursite via Forums and article marketing too.

    It's working great for me.

Forums, google, yahoo and msn! The social sites blow...you get traffic, but crappy quality. Although, I guess it could be good traffic...depending on your targeted customers and content.

Been reading a lot on where to advertise. All I have been doing in the past is writing my own content and letting the search engines do the rest.

I don't know if this is good or compares to anyone else out there but I recieve about 500-600 uniques a day. Google does basically nothing for me as does CJ.

My site spread through fishing tournaments, hosting a fishing tournament, magazines doing articles on me and product that I supplied free pages for. Also word of mouth. I guess my traffic is as targeted as it gets.

Pick a niche and get to know it like the back of your hand and write about it. I have submitted two articles to digg but the return was low. I guess fishing topics are not popular in the mainstream (no pun intended there.......)

You may need to consider the domain speciality of your website. Try to find some forums, and blogs related to your website domain specialty and contribute articles, questions, or blogs. It would give slow, but steady popularity over time.

Since i started advertising my site, i have got the best results from posting on forums related to my site, and having my website address in the signature.

I would reccomend advertising on Directories because this is were the people your looking for are and you can find some cheap advertising space on some directories.

Do you really use directories to find things? I use Google and Digg/DP mostly.

I advertise on sites i own since generally (banners links etc.). Along with blog posts in my blogs announcing info about my othersites.

Signature links here in DP drive a lot of traffic.

Google adwords can drive a lot of traffic. Ad campaigns here and at yahoo can be great sources of traffic if you have a website with a product you sell. You can definatly make money using this.

Advertise via sig in relevant forum brings in quick and targetted traffic. But like what Franck says, this is probably the most time consuming effort of all the marketing campaigns.

Some traffic came via social bookmarking but those are typically look-see visitors with no retention value.

Search Engines also provide me consistent stream of visitors. The no of visitors is in proportional to how much the marketing effort I have put into the site

submit your website into thousands of directories to gain some PR , and then go for link exchange with some good sites , may give you good visits from search engines , also visits from other pages is good too ,
