Where do I get ads to put on my site?

My website is almost finished and now I am starting to think about adding some ads. I already have a header and footer banner ad place but no ad to put in it.

Where should I get my ads (google, yahoo, self). I was thinking about this: http://www.openx.org/ad-server : for my ad server but I'm not sure if it is the best.

and what type of ads (popup, static, flash) should I place on my site?

and what would give me the most money? (pay per click, fixed rate, pay per impression)

and what is the proper size and rate for an ad should I use?

    Thanks.

if you aim high, don't waste your time with PPC ads..
mostly, except AdSe*nse, their rate s*cks..
top CPM network like tribal fusion only accept you to become their publisher if you have like hundred thousand UV/day
CPA and affiliate network would make you earn decent income, so these are the most reasonable monetizing method so far

Selling ad space on your website is better if your website is good. If you get a good traffic then go for flat rate ads. Open x is really good as an ad server for your website.

You can also convince advertiser by telling them you would give them detailed reports which you can generate from Open X for their campaigns.

Fixed rate would give you more, and some good sizes are 728x90, 300x250, 120x240, 125x125, 250x250 or 120x600, 160x600. These are standard sizes, if you can provide these options, it would be great.

    So should I do this:

since my site is new I start with google's Adsense for a small income and then when I have more traffic upgrade to OpenX server to sell my own ad's?

Does google's Adsense let me stop whenever I want?

    Thanks for the replies!

You can stop using google adsense anytime you want.

But google have started to approve publisher websites and their approval criteria are developing more and more.

Before applying, just make sure your website content is original and fully developed. The good thing about fixed rate ads is that you have a total control on your earnings. And its good if your website has a lot of traffic.

If your site is not already established with a known number of visitors regularly visiting your website, I think that your only choice to start with is Adsense.

Hey if you wanna manage your ads through OpenX then there are lots of Ad networks who pays good for eg: MTV Parenting tribe. They have lots of publishers who pay a good amount so check it out and let me know if you need more clarification.

So what everyone is saying, is I should finish my site then put google ads up, and when my site gets more visitors then upgrade to OpenX to sell my own ads?

I suggest you to go to Google ad-sense, because they are the best. One thing, DON'T PUT your site on traffic exchange to get clicks. If you do that, Google will band your site.
