I have a site I started about a month ago, I installed WP on it and built it out with content and at the same time worked on getting backlinks. I started building links by blog commenting and after a few weeks SEO Quake showed around 700 backlinks from yahoo which is great because my competition was sitting at a little over a thousand. So I kept my nose to the grind building links and content, a few weeks later I checked my links again with Quake and it is showing only 288 backlinks, so I was like crap where did my links go but I figured blog comment can be erased so maybe that is what did it. I continued to build links thinking I will just keep going until I get where I need to be but now the links are not sticking when before they showed up by the next day. What is going on?
The best thing to consider is link variation, try writing some articles and submitting them to high PR article directories such as articlebase.com (nofollow but articles get syndicated by tonnes of other sites), articleslash.net and ezinearticles.com Adding your link in the resource box is the best option and still works, just make sure your articles are unique and NOT copied.
My competition used Jet submitter to rewrite and submit hundreds of articles so I did the same thing around a thousand to be exact and none of them got indexed as links.
Article directories are a good start, take time and look for those with high PR. blog commenting is a way but the road can be treacherous, some blogs have a habit of disappearing without notice.
