The best way to promote for free is to join forums within your website's niche and offer useful posts. Include a link to your websites in your signature block. I find this works best and it is what some big sites used to get started.

You can start by creating Twitter, Facebook page, Linkedin then make sure that you have placed all the necessary details for you profile,like the URL to your site. It is also a big help if you create a blog then tweet and share every posts that you create. I hope this helps.

It doesn't really matter how, just be sure to stick to your niche. For example, Twitter takes less than 30 mins per day to promote your site. Create there an account, upload profile-photo, write a short description and start posting 5 tweets per day relating to your niche. In order to get your first followers, follow somebody who has low follow-list and send them a message why you like their profile. They will follow you back and then you won't even need to follow anyone

You can begin with paid promotion or free promotion. Paid promotion such as ppc - google adwords or other cheap ppc program, ppv, banner advertising, text links, etc. Free promotion also called Search Engine optimization (SEO) where visitors comes from organic search engine rankings (typically came from top 10 SE ranking) and this is a typical method. Just dig it DP forum. There are a lot threads over here.
advertise your site wherever relevant. Topsy is a good search engine to find discussions, as is www.BoardTracker.com but the latter is currently upgrading and not available as a splash page says.
If you have already search engine optimizing your website then i do have another idea i.e. Linkreferral (referral based advertising network). Just register and proceed with the instructions specified over there.
Someone has already mention Facebook and Twitter, but I just want to mention that you can get lots of traffic from them. If you just make tweets and Facebook comments with your site link it will get you some traffic.
As you can see those are all the same solutions. Main thing is to just get links (quality links are even better). How you gonna do this is up to you? All the solutions that you will find via google or even this forum are good, but one thing is more important - be systematic in anything that you do. Then it is just a matter of time that you will see results.

Is it necessary that the forums are within your website's niche? We have a specialist bed website. As we are a manufacturer we use a lot of woodworking machines. We joined a woodworking forum and have made many useful posts. I doubt Google will see a connection. Am I wasting my time there?
