Where can I learn basic css? Text doesn't respect my font tag parameters

I used to make my own (ugly) websites in plain basic HTML. I've recently had it redone properly with CSS but now I'm completely lost everytime I want to make a basic change.

For example all text appears differently than the parameters I mention in the font tag, that's the thing I need to learn ASAP as it's driving me nuts. Can anyone tell me how I get the text to appear in the font and size I want? That's really all I need to know for now, but I'd also like to know where I can learn more about this complicated CSS thing.

    Thanks

You should provide some bits of HTML and CSS code and specify which part is not working as expected.

You can learn more about CSS at w3schools.com
