    Huh, java?
You are intereseted in what kind of animation with which software?
Flash? 2D hand drawing animation? Or 3D animation with Maya or 3Ds max? :)

if you want to learn 3d animation using Maya, which is what I use, there are some great tutorials on learning-maya.com. Also there used to be great resources on the official maya website. Lynda also do some, free if you get a free trial :).

If you wanna do the Japanese animation type,
    maybe you can learn Retas!Pro.
Many of the Japanese animation studio use this,
except this, you may also want to learn about Animator Studio.

i haven't tried them yet, so maybe you will need to search for tutorial yourself.
2D animtion has troublesome process, you need to draw 24 to 30 pictures each second for the animation to run smooth.
if you are beginner for 2D animation, i think you can make some simple gif with Ulead GIF Animator first for some experiment about animation movement. :)

I would skip the Maya talk, not only it would not run on your laptop -it takes ages to master and its cartoon shading is not that great.

Not to mention how much does it cost...

Have a look at SmithMicro's Anime Studio. Easy to use and does exactly what you need.

I suggest using "Adobe Flash". It's fun and simply easier to use then those 3D Programs.

You could look up FlashKit and Angry Animator for Flash Tutorials
