Is it possible to tell where a particular website gets its traffic from?

Not without looking at the server stats. If you're looking at buying advertising somewhere they should give you access to these.

    You can guess it :)
By reviewing the website and analyzing focus on keywords and then checking its rank in search engines.
By checking inbound links and there popularity. :)

Just look at your server stats, if your host doesn't give you access to them like mine, try this free service. I use them and they are great, they tell you the entry pages, search engine traffic %, countries visiting, etc right down to individual visitors ip address etc.

Do you want to see where YOUR website traffic is coming from?

Do you want to see where your COMPETITOR's traffic is coming from?

These two questions have very different answers! :)
Which one are you interested in?

    Thanks for your responses.
I am interested in where a competitor's site is getting traffic from. Inbound links are not correct indicators of traffic.

I don't think that would give a very accurate estimate, if you need a guesstimate just look at the Alexa stats, though I wouldn't trust them.

How does Alexa tell you where the traffic is coming from?? Alexa only gives a rough estimate of the traffic ranking.

There are only 2 ways to find out the traffic stats of another website.
    1) Hack their stats folder by visiting theirdomain.com/stats
    2) Contact hitwise.com and pay for the data.

Alexa and other tools can give a very rough idea of the traffic but you can't get any stats worth looking at.

I was referring to Mongs post where he mentioned looking at the links and analising their rankings in the search engines. If you're going to be using this method it would be quicker and probably more accurate to look at the IBL partners Alexa rankings.

There is a website that can give you info on your competitor's traffic stats.

I can't remember the name of that site (I've been trying to find it) but there is a member on this board "Will Spencer" who brought it up in another thread... maybe you can go through some of his posts and find it. On a side note, you'll probably find a lot of other good stuff in his posts.

I don't think I will hack or pay hitwise (nice site. Thanks for telling me about it). I could do some research if I knew how it could help me. I will start searching the forums for posts by Will Spencer. Thanks for the lead. :)

    The site is www.hitwise.com

They are the only people with the data you are looking for.
