Only 8 years until you recoup your investment! ;)

Seriously though, congrats on starting. Every penny counts.

Instead of thinking that it's their fault, maybe that's because you're bragging?

I think there is some truth to this post. Folks involved in this industry get awfully self-involved, and can you blame them? Seeing the success that some people out there have achieved would certainly tilt the perspective.

People are missing the "friend" part of the OP's question. Maybe not everyone on here treats their friends well, but if one of my boys came up to me with some curiosity about the business, I would certainly oblige. I would supply the proper resources, offer advice, and give them everything I could to succeed.

I would NOT partner with them, because there is nothing worse than business coming between family or friends. Avoid this.

Seriously folks, do you all treat your friends so badly?

We do not. Just because most people decide it's useless to even try when we start explaining everything doesn't mean that it's our fault. I have two friends that are not so easily sared. One of them is still in the "baby" stage, so it's troublesome. The other one jumped to "child" fairly quickly, since I forced him to do some work. I am certain that they could do it, and I'm certain that the second one will probably do it - not on a big scale, but still.

That being said, he's still preocupied with useless(normal) teenager stuff - games, music and junk like that. So, he has no chance to catch up with me.

I'm still waiting for someone to tell me how to do it, every ebook claims to tell you how, but it's all nonsense really.

I wrote a small essay on the basics of online stuff for a friend who wanted a hand to start an ebusiness. I touched on the basics and left him with a lot of questions to look in to. He basically took one look and decided to was too much like hard work.

Try that - you should be able to scare them off :) And if they do work on it, then they'll still be glad of the help you gave them to get started.

Funny. I find myself in this situation again. I have a neighbor/friend and a siter who want to get into business online. I found a good affiliate program for them that pays upwards of $100 per sale and also gives them an opportunity to make money offline as well.

Then my neighbor/friend expresses a need for an html editor so I find her a free one. While test-driving it I got the idea to build her and my sister a good starter website with good,spider-friendly layout, good keyword density and prominence and designed to be very easy to customize. I designed one with the free html editor but made it a little to complicated for them so I spent another sleepless night putting together a more simple version.

Having finished all of that and spent another few hours putting toegether a readme file to tell them what to do and where to go from here I may have solved two problems with this type of request. The first-How do I make money online? Now I can say "Download this file and follow the instructions in the readme.html file." 2. I don't have to spend weeks and months of trying to explain what to do and eventually wind up with them giving up in frustration.

If you like, you can download the file at http://make-money-online-too.50megs.com/ under the "D****** Starter Kit" link. If you think this is going in the right direction I'd like to know. If it needs help I'd also like to know. If you like, send it to your friend who hates you because he thinks that you're holding out on him or is really just too lazy to put the work in.

I was up two night doing this. That's NOTHING compared to the hours and years I've spent working and dwelling on this kind of stuff. It really is a matter of "getting in where you fit in" niche-wise and finding ways to make money doing what you like to do or by making money in ways that you either think or know should make money. If all else fails send their asses to eBay. If you can't make money at the world's biggest yard sale then you can't make money at all.

you have to like this thing of ours. If they dont , then they wont like doing the work.

i have helped 2 friends get started. 1 of them has made alot of money and the other is just slow in getting it going.

its not for everyone and just tell them to read the forums here and get going. if they like it still in a week then help him out.

    Best advice in the thread.

If they aren't willing to find out on their own, they aren't going to get very far even if you explained it to them.

Now, if your friend has struggled for weeks trying to learn and asks for help it's another story. Determination should be rewarded. But, friends who expect you to hand over years of knowledge should be avoided like the plague, they're looking out for themselves only.

I tell my friends, think of idea, write 10 articles, and I'll set it up, pay for the domain, and host it and give them 90% of the profits.

None of them have taken the offer :p

LMAO... your too nice giving them the 90%... Shizznit, I tell them give me 50%... I have a friend that is an ebay seller and thats where he makes his income from using the 2nd bedroom of his apartment (full of ipod cases and all that stuff from china that is worth only $1 a piece according to him). He has no clue in web design and he paid 350 bucks for his ebay temp and was very upset when he saw how nice my websites look thinking he would be getting a discount. His template has a flash banner that the guy charged him an extra 150 bucks for (which we all know that is worth it for a good one). I just partnered up with him 50 / 50 for myimagecode.com <- I originally was going to make it a free image hosting site like imagetitan.com but he purchased this php program that is bad arse! I new this would get customers and make direct sales instead of traffic advertisement revenue. I uploaded the program less then a week ago and we already have received some customers! :) and thats only getting 25 unique visitors a day.

There's way too much out there to answer this question. Just find one system and put it into action. If it works great, if not move on. There's no one system for everyone.

This is the best way to answer:

"First of all, making money on the internet is not about technology, it is about WRITING. You need to write about something you feel passionate about. You need to write first. If you don't write first, you'll start off with a blank website that says "under construction", and nobody revisits those, right?"

"Before you even decide what you want your website to look like, you need to write about something that you are interested in. Carry around a notebook and write when the passion fills you. Or write in an editor on your computer. When you have five pages, let me know, and I'll show you how to set up a website and sign up for a Google Adsense account which is the easiest way to make lots of money on the Internet. But don't forget that this is very, very hard work."

When they ask me to sign up for an Adsense account for them, I tell them no, "I can't do that, it's like setting up a bank account for someone with PIN numbers, social security numbers, bank account numbers, etc. And, I think it's illegal".

I tell them to get back to me when they have five pages. I can't tell you what to do next because nobody ever gets back to me with even one page!

Q: Can you write the content for me?
A: If I do ALL the work, then I make ALL the money and what do I need you for? Work I do for you takes away from work I do for myself - what, you want me to lose money so you can make money?

    Q: How easy is it?
A: It's hard. Harder than any job I've ever done.

Q: Can you link to me from your site?
A: I can only do that if your site is directly related to the subject of my site. If it isn't, Google will see the link as spam and we'll both get penalized.

Q: Can't you start a website for me now?
A: No. You do work for yourself first before I do work for you.

Q: Can't you break the rules for me with Google, search engines, etc.
A: NO. I follow all the rules. Why not - following all the rules has made me money so far!
This is very important - if I stick and do not waver from my "I follow all the rules and use no tricks" mantra, I find that people stop bugging me.

If they know you are a success online, almost everyone that approaches you to help them start an online business ultimately wants you to cheat for them. They think that you know some secret illegal trick that will guarantee them income. I stick to a very hard line that "I do not do anything illegal - it is all good writing". I absolutely refuse to discuss SEO - I tell them "if you write well, the money will come".

These answers satisfy everyone while causing no hard feelings, because it places the focus on good writing - making money is equal to good writing. That places all the work squarely on their shoulders.

BUT - if you have already been foolish and told the people asking you that you cheat or fool the search engines, have special illegal tricks, that you make money while doing nothing ("I'm making money while drinking beer with you"), then you are hosed and they will never leave you alone.

Just refer him to some forums like DP and say you learn't most of your stuff from websites like this. There is no easy way , you better tell him that.

Whenever one of my friends ask me I just say 'GTFO'. It always works but say it in a jokey way. Your friend probably asked you because you were possible bragging about it?

It takes time to make money online. When you are doing IM on part time basis, you need a alot of time to see things come through.
