i was reading this article about the palin debate and this jumped out at me: "In another experiment, Simons stopped people on the street and asked for directions. Halfway through the answer, he arranged for two men carrying a door to walk between him and the person giving the answer. After the door passed by, Simons was gone -- and one of the people carrying the door was standing in his place. Half the time, people did not notice the person they were talking to had changed." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/10/05/AR2008100502176.html?hpid=topnews it just reinforces the notion that most, 90% of people just breeze through life, not particularly focused one one particular subject or the other. the most important things could be paying the mortgage and the kids grades, other things may just not be important to them, they procrastinate, dont pay attention to detail, do what is intuitive and quick, etc. its interesting what you learn about this human behavior. the reasons behind why some people dont uncheck a crossell on a signup form, making price points an off #’s (rather than 29.99, make it 28.57/mo., to make it blend in with other purchases that had the tax added, or making 40.00 charges ATMbill, etc), even the basic rebilling model, on a site membership purchase. i always believed tha skill or rhetoric was the most valuable one you could acquire. You can see this with politicians soundbites every day, I remember somebody on some board posting some time back something like “90% of people are sheep. But watch out for the other 10%"
great post! Finally something intelligent (it has been awhile ) The arguement that people simply do not care or "breeze through life" is a valid one in my opinion. Here is a quick trick that one of my Psy. Professors played on our class... -In teams of 4 you are to deliver a notion of true or false. - In each team is a mole, a student who will ultimately use their popularity or smarts to change the other group members opinion. The other students are unaware of these moles. - The question posed is (just a random insert for explaination); is it truth that A is equal to A? Of course A is an A but the mole will convince the other students that the answer is D which is something totally left field...And slowly they will all agree that it is D instead of the true answer of A. In corralation to the political side of things, 90% of people are sheep and you can simply change their views through a paradigm shift of acceptance of norms And thats my two cents for the day
The messenger counts just as much as the message in my opinion... If it was an attractive woman asking for directions, and she was replaced by someone else, chances are a guy would notice because he was more interested in the woman then the directions he was giving. If it was a less interesting, attractive, whatever person, then the directions giver would be more focused on the task at hand, or what ever else is going on in their life. This is why politicians can have completely ridiculous policies in their plans, because people only focus on what they are interested in, and tend to put the rest in the background as they sift through it.
thanks for the reply. i keep tabs on the adult side of the market, paysites and such, and its gotten pretty vicious over there. things had gotten tighter with the market and there are lots of "prechecked crossells" over there, where they try to hide a box that will charge a consumer an extra $40/mo. and so on. then they try to explain it that the charge was "clearly" on a page, but what they are doing is akin to adding extra terms to the back of a paper contract and claiming it was all, in the contract
There was a British television show, very much like Candid Camera, where they had a store outfitted with a bunch of cameras and a clerk working the register. The clerks would do something, like drop a pen or a card of something and then bend down to pick it up, and a different person would stand up. Very few people noticed. A few noticed when the clerks were wearing different colored shirts, and a few more noticed when it was a woman instead of a man.
I have learnt that every person has their advantages and disadvantages. Learn from others , it benefits you and your future.
I learn that people are always on th lookout for bargains, never mind the quality as long as it's cheap
