20k uniques daily....hmm....DB connections were maxing out today. Go for a VPS with atleast 256MB guaranteed RAM.

Im a bit off on VPS. They seem to present an alternative step, but why not go for a cheap dedicated server.

Even the smallest dedicated server will compete with the best of VPS. Youll have more bandwidth, more ram, more space for a few dollars more.

LOL...you make me laugh. Entry level dedicated VPSs start from $50 a month unmanaged, whereas I have a 256MB+512MB burst RAM, Core2Duo fairshare, 10GB space, 300GB premium bandwidth in UK unmanaged for ~$9 a month from a reputed VPS provider.
Now beat this deal...and yes, I'm happy with it ;)

Also, not everyone requires all such space, power and bandwidth of a dedi, but a little more than what shared hosting can offer. If all people migrating from shared hosting opt for dedicated boxes, imagine how much processing power and hardware would go unused...dedi boxes take 10 times the electric power than a VPS ;)

Actually you may be better off going with a power-house VPS. Lets say you do get one for $50-60 /mo. Thats much better off than paying twice or 3 times that amount.

Go up each plan level as needed.

Upgrade to VPS when your shared hosting provider's server starts moaning and they warn you about it :)
