I wouldn't have released a press release e.g. today (bombs found in london), try to get the press release sent out on calm days where news dont have much to write about
Yea.. makes sense. I didn't know if people had better luck on some days than other. I am having a promotion on my website. Giving away an Xbox 360 Elite to draw people in but want to have a press release to get the word out.
As to the bombs in London, that has nothing to do with anything. You're not competing on that level and with that type of news. I'm pretty sure game sites aren't reporting hard news. And your PR will most likely go in the trash bin of the real media, so no worries there. But, if you must pick a day, send it out Sunday morning if you're trying to target the press.
hmmm probably monday...but the stuff usually takes a few days to get syndicated anyways so it is hard to say...syndication can be instant or take a week or 2.
If you're mostly looking for online coverage, release it on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning. They've always performed better in online media for my clients in anything from blogs to major online outlets.
Just a lot of experience running a PR firm and distributing a hell of a lot of press releases for clients of all walks.... Tuesdays tend to perform the best, and Wednesdays are a close second. Weekends are typically the worst time unless you're only looking to hit blogs, but even that isn't great. Mondays there are usually a lot of people competing with you for their attention and more distractions with the week's start of work, and Thursdays and Fridays tend to be a better fit with "fluff" news.
I've had JHMATTERN above do a few press releases for me and she is right on with what she says! She is full of experience ! Tony
Even with it being a Tuesday, if you're aiming for a predominantly US market, keep in mind that you're coming up on a holiday on the 4th... meaning it's somewhat closer to weekend mentality. Thanks Tony. I've actually been meaning to get back to you on something, but it keeps getting pushed aside with everything else going on. I'll put it on my board and be sure to drop you an email when I'm back from holiday things.
If you're not talking about the iPhone or bombs in London, it's just not news right now. Go get your Jesus phone before it's too late.
I've got a friend who is a senior news editor for a large radio network. He recommends the weekend for smaller issues or quirky topics (as your promo might be) as business and political news items aren't been promoted on those days.
That's ok for radio if they're featuring news on weekends, but be sure to keep in mind that it works a lot differently in print and online media, where the bulk of the work is done over the work week, and deadlines for even weekend news stories can be a day or two in advance.
