I've read several posts on this, and I see that the answer to the question of when is the best time to put up google ads on a website is, "it depends."

Okay, I get it. It depends on a lot of factors.

Can somebody explain to an IM newbie why he might want to put up ads early or why he might want to wait? What are these factors you consider when deciding whether or not you will put up your ads early or whether or not you will wait?

Well im fairly new too. But my guess would be:
Early: So the google crawlers can crawl your site in time for you to finish.
Late: So all the content is already on your site before the google crawl your site.

I dont know what the best choice is.. And i could be totally wrong.

It's always better to put adsense after getting writing some posts which gets visitors from search engine and some backlinks.

Otherwise you will get less targeted and low paying ads.....

From what I understand some people don't like to put up the ads before Google comes and spiders your site or you may get public service ads or irrelavant ads until Google figures out what your site is about. I use Wordpress blogs and it automatically pings Google so the bot usually shows up in a day or two. But I usually put the ads immediately and 9.5 out of 10 times the ads display immediately, as soon as I refresh the page. Most times I have only a post or two, however the keywords are already in the meta tags and H1 tags, URL, etc. I'm not sure about the low paying ads other than if you put to many ad units on your site then lower paying ads will show as well. If I wait I'll probably be on another project and forget to put it on  but that's just me.
