    So say you have a site that gets a lot of users fast would it be smarter to hire and employ to manage your website, i.e. update, work on code, backend, frontend or are there companies out there that you can turn to to fix, update etc.

    If you can't do it yourself in a reasonable amount of time or you can't get the result you want and would require custom development I would hire someone to do it for me.
