When to do link building

I have a website that isn't fully up yet. I was wondering if I should start building links on websites now or wait until it's fully done. I know that if you have a good amount of targeted links it will help you with the search engines. my question is how much business do you think i would lose if people see the link and go to the website and it doesn't work. I'm sure that I won't get a very good conversion rate anyways because of the product i'm selling along with the economy. but i think it would help me get higher ranking in the search engines.

Do you guys build links before a website is fully done?

If so what do you put on your website to let people know to come back?

I think it would depend on how close the website is to being finished. I would only do link building once the website is in a presentable state. For example, you could finish the homepage, but have a 'coming soon' note on your product page. It doesn't matter a whole lot if your customers see your incomplete website, but search engines might not like it. The search engines might not like that your pages drastically change afterwards.

Links do get stronger with age. So it probably is a good idea to do some link building quite early. If you do this, you just have to be willing to accept a temporary drop in rankings once you make any major changes on the pages.

I think you should do some early. A few of the search engines give new sites a bit of a penalty, that way you can get it out of the way much faster than if you waited

I would wait if you want a good reputation, because if someone sees your site later they might think, oh that site is full of errors, I would wait. You can exchange links and buy them to, you can buy one from my website if you want :)

It's probably never too early, since you won't get ranked right away anyway. Better to start sooner and then never stop.

I think you dont start your link building until the site is "functional" after it is up and usable. Then start your link building program, which never stops during the life span of your web site.

This all depends on what kind of site you got....
But you should start promoting your site when you feel that is ready for launch.
You can however start building you backlinks from directory submission when your site is filled with enough content. Since most directorie take up to 3 months and more to accapt your links.

I would wait until a significant portion of your site is up and bug free. I think it's ok to have less important areas of your site coming soon ..., but I wouldn't start building links before that point.

I would suggest start slow link building and target finished pages.... create 2-3 good links for the finished pages..
and once your website then start 10 links per day and after 2 month increase it....

I start building links earlier before the site is done. I normally put up a holding page on the homepage with good content relating to the site. I have such a site that has PR 2 now, and yet I haven't finished developing the script.

It is important you let your visitor know that the site would be fully available soon.

there are 2 general goals of link building: 1. driving direct traffic from the linking site, and 2. search engine optimization. if you can't satisfy the user or the search engines yet (as vansterdam discusses) then you should wait until you can either give the user something useful, or give the search engines something they can crawl and index. getting links to a site that isn't done/ready/complete is making google come to your site and showing them it isn't done. if it's partially done and the site structure is complete, and there is content, i would say go ahead and start slowly getting links. start with getting the highest quality links first to establish your site within the authority ring.

If the search engines find broken links to your future site then you could be penalized in the future. You should wait until it is up and running in my opinion.

If you start building links too early the spiders will crawl unfinished pages and since your site is new it might take some time before the finished page is spider again. Before you start building back links have at least the most important pages ready so that they get indexed with the proper content! The other option is to add a meta tag blocking the spiders from indexing the page until you are done.
