When things don't go quite as expected

I have been working away to raise a sub-section on one of my sites to better positioning, and managed to get onto the bottom of the front page of Google for some of the phrases.

Not bad so far - then stuck, never able to get above #8 on Google.

Made some other changes to the website template for increasing site stickyness, and reasoned that it should have a negative impact on my SEO for the sections I had been working on, but it was an acceptable trade-off.

    They jumped 4-5 places.

Sometimes, I give up - in a nice way

Great, a bit part of seo is just fiddling around seeing what works and what doesn’t. Would you mind describing some of the template changes you made?

Just trial and error sometimes. If it doesn't work you can easily change it back

Added some extra links to the side menu for most popular emailed news articles. That was all.

If you're using a Wordpress Blog based site then you can get a plugin to do that.
