Does Category matter greatly when submitting to directories?

I have a particular product that I cannot seem to fit within a category.

What do you suggest I do?

Category does matter, try to find a category that comes as close as you can. Remember, you can often contact the directory owner to ask for a new category if you need to.

If your site is listed in a specific category which is relevant then you will be receiving the backlink from a page with relevent content, so the backlink will have more weight.

choosing the category that is suitable for a site is a must bec. it somehow determines the relevancy of the linking page along with the sites listed on it

If you don't submit to the proper category then you will be denied and your work will be useless. ;)

Not sure about other directories but on mine it does - apart from the fact that if I see something that's been misfiled I will move it. When you post on my directory you get a separate page that can be indexed on Google - in the title of this page is the category along with the text that you put in with your post (which makes it better SEO'd than other directories... in my humble opinion...)
