I have recently lauched a new site. I currently use adsense on all my other sites apart from the new one. On previous sites I have added adsense when they first launched however I am not sure if this is the way to go. So, when do you add adsense (or any ads) to a new site? Is it after a few weeks, certain amount of visiters or other factors? Thanks, Greg
You can add it whenever you want. What is the harm in getting a few clicks while the traffic builds up. Of course, it is another view if you want to wait to develop readership by keeping a ad free site, and then add it later.
On problogger.net I found some reasons why not to add adverts to blogs. Not much money - it takes time to build readership and in the mean time it doesn’t really earn much Bring in the Audience - ads can put off a potential audience. When you’re working on establishing yourself you want to give your visitors as few reasons as possible not to come back But what are the disadvantages and advantages of using it on a site not blog/forum. Greg
Greg I think that adding Adsense to a blog doesn't hurt. Many readers come to expect some sort of advertising on a blog to compensate the author for his time and effort. I've got a blog that I've been using Adsense on since Day1 and it's well worth it since it covers my hosting and some [small] part of my time.
I would add it right away, so after that, you have time to aim for the content, instead of debating when to add, or dream about the ads
I don't think many people are going to build up a strong readership very quickly full stop - and if you do, they'll be there for what you say, and shouldn't be put off by a little AdSense. Personally, I'd say put AdSense in at the start to be sure that it integrates with your site from the beginning. As for readership - most of the blog traffic would almost certainly be from natural search, and a great number of these are casual surfers who are pretty happy to click out. Better to find a way to get a few pennies from it when they do. Clear warning, though - you are not going to generate a strong income in a short time with just one blog.
Another angle to look at is how impressive is your site with or without any ads? I see ads on cnet.com, my.yahoo.com, cnn.com, etc and I see no ads on some blogs and personal home page. Who looks more legitimate? The ads may look like you have arrived and people what ads space on your site. Of course you can argue that anyone can get ads onto their sites.
I think SHT wanted to know opinions re. adding adsense to sites - not blogs. If the site is functional with all links working etc, I think you can go ahead with Adsense. I have one in the works now that is killing me because I have the basis of the site but it will take me ages to get all the content pages up. I wish I could just let it fly now.
I concur with most who have said "add it when you feel the time is right". The factors I would include in the decision would include: a) human edited directories are supposed to ignore ads, but do they? b) How good is your hosting site? adsense eats a chunk of bandwidth and slowed down page loads on my dsl hosted site by quite a bit. c) How good is your content? If it is unique and informational then people will come whether you have ads or not. If it is lame and shallow, having ads or not won't matter either. If it is inbetween, then the extra lag of ads might present a retention issue. If you have a good site with good content and a good host then go for it. If you have a lame site with crap content or a terrible host, then go for it as well . If you have something in between then you may want to think about fixing what address the issues that will affect retention before you drive too many folk away.
I think you should add adsense right from the beginning so that your visitors become attuned to seeing the ads.
Just an Ideal, you might want to try to mix it up ADSENSE for content, and even throw in som CHITIKA for keyword relevance. Either way, start it right away, you have nothing to lose. 1cent is better than no cents, as visitors improve, so will your earnings.
Sorry forgot, you may also want to experiment, since the site is new with ad locations. I have found that you dont want to upset readers with an ad every 25 words, obviously. However, a side panel with relevant ads or strategically placed ads maybe very beneficial.
