When Should You Upgrade Your Hosting?

I have a site that gets about 1000 uniques a day? Is this too big for a share server? When Should I start thinking about upgrading my hosting to a VPS or Dedicated?

I don't really know anything about hosting or the bandwidth I would need and that sort of thing, so when would you upgrade?

To Moderators: I think this is the best place for this post as to there are no other "hosting" forums. If not, please move to correct location.

You host will most likely inform you that your site(s) are using too much CPU, and will need to be moved (hopefully, they won't suspend you immediately). 1000 Uniques may not be that heavy if all the pages are static, but could be a strong load if it something like a web based proxy - it all depends on the content. At that point, you would need to upgrade.

Also, try to find out what your sites use, so you can see how many spare resources you have left.

It depends on content, a website with a large database may not be ok on shared hosting while one with no db run just fine.

Your host will tell you when it is time to upgrade.

On an average site you would need to upgrade to a VPS/Dedi when your site recieves 30,000+ UV a day.

Well, it looks like 1000 uniques is enough, because my host said I was using 30% of their CPU. The site has a relatively large database that it is communicating with constantly.

Yes, your host is probably suggesting that you upgrade to a VPS plan, or another plan with them. However, if it's not a VPS (or dedicated), then it probably won't help as CPU isn't something that is allocated on shared hosting.

If your host has contacted you it means that your site is effecting others, best to move to a dedicated solution, where it would only effect you, having 1000 uniques daily or large database shouldn't have effected others, however if you do not switch the host might have no other choice but to kick you off their server, make sure you have a local backup copy of your site and database, just in case you might have to switch without notice.
