Guys, When would it be a wise move to move a site from virtual hosting to a more robust dedicated server? Roughly speaking, how many uniques a day? Cheers
Depends, are you using up too many resources on shared hosting? Can you move to say a VPS for a while?
That's what I was going to ask. It doesn't really depend on how much traffic you get, but of how many resources you use. I was kicked out of a few shared hosting companies because my site was using too much database power and was causing a strain on the servers. Now I am on VPS, and happy as can be.
Virtual Private Server. It's a concept of running multiple virtual machines on a single physical machine. Each of the VMs get a portion of the physical resources or they all share some resources (hence CPU, RAM, etc, hogging people complain about). A VPS looks just like a normal dedicated server from the configuration point of view (I guess, it depends on what software it's using, though). J.D.
My CPU is ok, just I am maxing out other stuff. Like exim complains all day log that too many files are open currently and other stuff.
Thanks all. As soon as it's feasible I'll be making the move. Im very familair with using cpanel as the backend... im hoping some of the dedicated servers use the same backend? Also (as you can tell Im a complete noob when it comes to server admin) is there a difference between normal dedicated servers and managed dedicated servers? Can you get a decent dedicated server package for around $100/150 a month which is managed?
Most likely... When does a site become resource intensive? Would you say a forum site with 50 users online at any one time uses alot of resources?
