It depends on how long the site has been live. How many backlinks the site has. What keywords the site is optimized for. And how popular those searches are.

Search engines don't give traffic, they just list sites.
If nobody is searching for what your site is about, or they aren't attracted by your listing, or it's buried too many pages in, you won't get traffic.

When people refer to domain age, what are they refering to exactly? How long it has been registered, how long indexed, or how long a site has been up.

It depends on the terms, competition and search volume. A site i just done, in 11 days its getting 300 UV per day from natural search as it ranks top 5 on its 8 primary keyphrases and they have 15 million or less results.

However it could take up to 3 months to start getting really decent search traffic.

If your keywords have higher search volume, traffic is not a problem

My website is targetted for "ecommerce web hosting" which is a fairly popular term. I just now started ranking up to #26 (3rd page) on Google. I have not recieved a visitor yet from that standing. I think it really is true, you need to be on the first page, if not the first 4-5 links listed for your term.

I wouldn't recommend targeting that search phrase - it has tonnes of competitors but not many searches per month (only 1500).
