When paying someone to blog, is a contract needed?

I'm just curious, I have several bloggers writing for me. Their job is simply just translating but I'm paying them via paypal.

Do we need to write up a contract or anything? I never really thought about it, just simply paid them. Until now, one of my bloggers asked and I don't know the answer...

Well if depends on what you want to do.. If its a freelence kinda job then no.. but if its long term and you blog is growing into a company then you might want to write up a contract..

Most of the time only the big blogs have contracts like mashable.. Because if the owner sales it he will get a lot and it wouldn't be right it the writers didn't get a cut

    Thanks for the answer.

Also, how much should I be paying people to blog? They're not writing original content posts just translating from another language into English.

I disagree. Even for freelance work some sort of written agreement between the two parties should be used, as this not only shows professionalism but also helps arbitration should there be any later disagreement.

I freelance programming and conduct business in this manner.

Well when dealing with people you have never met, it is essential that you have some sort of agreement so they cant say you owe them more money. As far as what to charge different areas have different rates. So use you discrepancy as to what you think that it is worth.

    Upto you.

If you believe it's worthwhile havine a contract, do so.
    If not, then don't.

I have to suggest that you write your own blog if you only have one site. You will less expenses and will gain experience in the process.
