When Links Go Bad

    Hi All,

I would like to share one scenario and request you all to share your thoughts and inputs here.

Yesterday, a client came to us for his link building requirement. He was bit upset with his previous link building vendor. Reason was he thought that his website ranking suddenly dropped due to the link they delivered. Client also shared his link details for our perusal and instructed us not to deliver links of that quality.

We checked all links and we got that link sources are thematically relevant and having PR 1-2. So, the question is “how could it be the reason for SERP downfall” as we are not convinced with client’s argument.

Yes, Me too have experienced the same issue. I used to call it google DANCE. To over come this, We have to keep on adding backlinks till we reach TOP. As far as my experience, there is no ISSUE on getting relevant links as far as those are NOT SPAMMY links, those will never do harm to SERP. However, We have to keep on adding links.

And you're still seeing the drop in rankings or everything is normal now?

We have checked his website ranking for the same keyword( used as anchor text in all links) and it ranks on 28. However, client said that earlier his website ranked between 10-15.

Even irrelevant links won't negatively affect the site in such away, let alone relevant links, I think you should look else where for the reason why the site has dropped in rankings. Maybe an issue with the client or alot of improvement by competitors

I thought links to your site from link farms or "bad neighbors" could have a negative effect?

I guarantee that's not the reason for his drop in ranking... Period

But, unless you know exactly how Google's Algorithm works, it's anybody's guess at this point!

so called bad links can only affect websites that are quiet new...older Websites wont be affected normally...

ofc when the niche is Viagra and you spam the fuck out of a website then the owner will be in trouble...else it doesnt do anything

That is a brilliant quote for googles algorithm and the reason to drop in rankings.

How old was his site? I've seen newer sites (especially blogs hosted as blog.wordpress/blog.blogspot) go from initially ranking rather high to suddenly dropping 10-20 PAGES after the newness seems to go away.

This is for links you place on your own website.

To the OP, what type of links are we talking about?

It's easy. Get merit-based links. What types of links did your client show you? Were they primarily blog comments, social media and forum signatures? Or were they authoritative links from related sites within their market, as well as independent authority sites that have a lot of influence and trust with the search engines?

I believe backlinks wont have a negative effect if they are from bad neighbourhoods just that they wont count in google.
