When linkbuilding, how often should you be submitting in directories

I was talking to a buddy at work about this today, he mentioned that ideally you wouldn't want to submit your site to over 1 directory a day since eventually since you want to be spammy.

I know directories are decent for link building, but I've also heard if you do directories you want to put your site up in as many (credible) directories as possible.

So now I'm confused

 

Well i must say that submit in directories as much as you can because not every free directory is going to place your link soon upon submission and some may even take up to months, so it wont harm you. submit submit and submit

 

I don't agree at all. You should strictly adhere to the rules of each directory and never submit your site(s) more often than recommended.

What I like to do is take time and research the directories you're going to submit to. Start by finding directories in your niche and submit to all of them over the course of a month. Then look for directories where the category in which you'll be listed is indexed in google. I take about 1/2 hour a week and it ends up being 2 to 5 directories.

You should put your link to Director Submissions 25 times a week. These 25 submission, you can do in a single day.

 

I don't agree to this, as when you do the submission no directory will instantly approve your link. It will take atleast 3 weeks before your link gets posted so continue with them submissions. But after the Google Panda update the value of such submissions has decreased.

 

Everyone is just submitting his sites to the Directories without even caring to know whether the relevant page (where the site is to be placed in the directory) is being crawled by the Search Engines or not. Be that as it may, now Google is not giving so much credence to the directory submissions. However, genuine Bookmarking submissions/ unique Articles/ Blog postings/ Forum submissions do have the relevancy.

 

I do directory submission of 20 per day.
