When is there a need for a static IP address?

When I first started my website, there was an option for a static IP, the host said I didn't need it so I didn't fork out the whole 1 dollar per month is costs. :)

I have always wondered what the purpose would be for having this, maybe the DP folks can explain.

If you are on shared hosting and we share same ip, if I spam, centrain site will ban my IP and you get thrown out at same time.

    ssl, anonymous ftp, sometimes nameservers

the spam/banning is usually a red herring, if the host overall cleans out the bad apples quickly

So does this mean that if your site gets banned by IP then you can just move to another host and everything will be fine?

My host only charges ten dollars extra per year for static IP. Not exactly a huge amount.

I've had it happen and it can be a problem. Despite that, I still don't run all my sites on dedicated IPs, but I am on my own dedicated so I have control over who shares the IP. If I was on a virtual account I'd opt for the IP address.

the amount of spamming and consequent banning going on these days it does pay to have at least one IP :)
