I have recently started my dir, it's currently PR5 due to the domain name.

When do I know my dir is ready to charge $ per submissions ?

For integrity of the site and to attract good listings would advise that you charge from the start, to attract a steady influx of listings to form a base to build upon.

Suggest that initially you charge rates that are not expensive

Then after the next PR update you can consolidate and maybe increase your rates

Work very hard and do not expect business to come in without your continuous support and back up

By the way because the domain name you are using is PR5 does not mean that PR will be maintained, you will need strong back links to stabilize at PR5 and your site will need to get strong indexing etc and of course you will need good content

Of course everything is doable but it will require a lot of time and effort

Set high standards or if you dont want to set high standards then it is better not to start

    Good luck with your venture:)

The PR for your directory appears to be from a previous redirect. Look at the current cached version of the page. Did you buy an expired domain or a domain for sale?

Nope, I had this domain for a couple of years. It remained with no DNS entry for some weeks, and this may be the cause for no cache at Google.

There is no penalty nor ban to it ;-)

I started my directory, i did not accept any free submissions, since the first submission it was paid , and at the same price it currently stands. I did submit 15 of my own sites though.

If you only want to charge money for your directory, it will not go long.

Keep your mind to the directory market, promote your directory again and again.

Yes money flows with the directory if you promote it well and If your inner pages has got PR you will get many more submissions monthly

with a PR3 domain and PR2 inner pages it is quite possible to get 20 submissions per month

for one submission you may get $3 and it will be around $60-70 monthly

    My view.
At day one you decide ( paid or free ) and stick with it the rest of your directory natural life :)

I normally don't think much. Just makeit paid when I think that now it's enough marketing.

I think this is the way to go. You need to have some links or people won't trust you. Then once your traffic starts coming and your PR is good (inner pages included) then go to paid.

I've been asking a lot about this lately and that seems to be the general consensus.

Another good indicator is the number of feature listings bought, if you're selling lots of featured links than it is time to go paid.

    Hope this was helpful.

If that were true, then you'd agree that it's quite odd it's listed as expired and was deleted on Oct. 28, 2006 and then registered on Nov. 26, 2006.

Expired domains deleted on Oct. 28, 2006

I think a directory is ready for whatever you as the owner is ready for.

I think maybe starting out with several hundred free submissions is a good way to grasp a 'quality' oriented view on whats submitted.

Once you feel you have that pretty much down, you can start out with something as low as $1 for regular submissions.

With the small change that you are able to get, I would suggest reinvesting it back into some authoritive directories with some decent PR.

then blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda :D
