I am going to start an Orchid Forum and need advice on hosting services.

I currently have a reseller hosting account...should I just start the forum on what I have now and then when I get Huge amounts of traffics should I buy a dedicated server package?

My package right now is 5000 megs bandwidth and 500 Megs disk space. :)

Yeah, no use on spending big bucks until you need the power a dedicated offers. You will need to be getting very high traffic.

let me tell you, be careful. I have a site that quickly exceeded the plan of my shared hosting provider...I am getting 125,000 unique visitors per day and serving up 25gb per day. I switched to a dedicated server from liquidweb which was fully managed and I researched them too.

Those guys have no clue how to handle a high bandwidth application. They don't care. The server has overloaded twice and that's with 2gb of ram and 2 - 3 Ghz Xeon processors....no one gives a shit if my server goes down. Nor when it goes down do they offer any explanation or testing....

I think I need to move to rackspace. Unless you are a linux administrator, a dedicated server is hard because if things go wrong, even if the server is managed, no one is there to help you fix it, not do they care.

Guess I need to hire a unix / apache / red hat expert...it seems no one else cares enough to keepo my server up and running.

If you have a dedicated server for such a site and don't have a server admin, you are doing things wrong

Pay some guy 100 bucks a month and forget about your problems

Funny how you post about this. The above two companies is what I have narrowed my selection down to. From the service end of things rackspace seems to be on the ball if not one of the best out there. For overall price it seems you get more out of Luquid Web. I find it funny how you speak of bandwidth b/c Luquid Web offers 8 times as much per month more than rackspace on a basic plan.

Your post is helping me make my decision.
