When is it ok to start building links

I have a question, I am starting to build a few new websites, but because of the complexity of the sites and all the work that needs to be done to them I won't have either site up and running for at least 2 months.

Is it ok to start building links now, or should I wait until I have something on the site?

What would you do if you were me, get a jump start on link building or just wait?

I really need your opinions I am lost on this one.

Meh, I do some linkbuilding(albeit limited) to help get stuff indexed. I always throw up some sorta coming soon page like this
and hurl a few links at it. Whopper of an e-commerce gig and waiting on product photos so its ok to to do a few things in the meantime.

At the end of the day it will likely speed some things up.

    hope that helps,
    Nigel

Yes, you can start link building but i wouldnt suggest to do that now
It will always be better to complete your website and work out on the On-page SEO before go for link building

Yeah I am thinking that the best thing for me to do is get a few pages up and work out the kinks later. That way I can start building backlinks and have a goal of an actual launch sometime within 2 months. Link building takes time and I don't want to wait 2 months to get the site up and then another 2 months for link building. I think it would be best to do both at the same time and get a big just in 2 months when I reveal the new site.

I think that sounds like a plan - just make sure that what you put up initially is not too broken. If it's full of 404s or errors then Google might not like it. Also the less it differs from your eventual site the better.

Yeah, that was what I was thinking as well. I will put the site up to look just like my site will, but I won't make the site very deep, only like 2 pages back and that will be it for now.

I agree. Do your Site Map, submit your RSS feed, link to what ever is done or any content that is ready for eyes, and throw a few links to the main URL around..forum sigs and what not.

Personally, I really wouldn't start building links to your site until it is finished. If a visitor or potential clients visits and unvisited site with kinks, it might turn them off from your site for good. If you are going to do it, I agree with the above, only build links to what you have done.

Still, I would suggest waiting until your site is complete. Slow and steady wins the race.

Its probably best to start building links to your website when it is up and running already because some website with which you do your link exchange with are very particular about seeing their links on your website and now how can you do it when your website is not yet running.

Personally I would complete the site and do the on page stuff. Then once complete start building links and continue to add good content.

    Pretty much what simmo125 said.

I would certainly wait until you get running, you want to get it indexed and spidered as a final page. Also if your content changes significantly it may take some time to reflect.
