When is a 'changed page' not a 'changed page' ?

    Hi,
I have a question which I have been trying to research - and thought that maybe readers of this forum would be able to assist me:

I know that search engines generally favour (to one degree or another) sites which have changing content. My question is this: How do search engines (esp. Google) determine that a page has 'changed'?

My web site contains lots of dynamically-changed pages (i.e. the content is changed according to database content) but the .asp files themselves (e.g. "home.asp") do not change.

Do the search bots look at the DATE of the file being requested for a specific page or do they look at the actual html page served up and compare content, in order to ascertain if the page has "changed" ??

:) Any information will be most welcome.........

Anytime I upload a page it gets a date and time stamp. I wonder if Google does not use that informatioin for freshness? Do not know how Google may view dynamic content in regard to freshness.

McDar has an interesting experiment going that is now looking at casche date, date and time stamp in regard when page was last updated, and SERP result. It currently appears as cache date gets old SERP is falling.

If GG uses the date & time stamp information, it would help to upload dynamic pages on regular basis (twice daily :) ) as both the content and date & time stamp would be changed.

It sounds to easy for me.
