When is a backlink a backlink?

I've recently set up my site www.easysudokusolver.com and I'm confused by what counts as a backlink in Google's eyes, Websitegrader.com say I have 1, Google says not and yet there are several links from Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon etc. showing up in SERPs.
    Any one got any ideas?

Google never shows all backlinks. Try Yahoo Site Explorer instead for a better look at your backlinks.

All the backlinks you have to your site are backlinks. Google only lists a small number of them. These are usually from better sites.

It depends on the SE. In Google, backlinks are considered backlinks if they are dofollow. Yahoo, meanwhile, counts links even if they are nofollow.

You should use google webmaster tools to find your backlink in Google. Don't use link:domain.tld query.

Back links are those links from where some one comes to your site or the search engine bots find your site, in simple words its an add and a path of your site. Just check out your back links in Google webmaster tools account.:)

    What kind of surprises??
I have been using yahoo's site explorer and it is the most accurate compared to google or backlinkwatch.
google shows PR on the basis of dofollow links because it doesn't follow the nofollow links. Yahoo and Bing follow both dofollow as well as nofollow, but only take dofollow links into consideration for calculating PR.

Yahoo Explorer is certainly better than Google for showing backlinks but it still doesn't show some links that I have found using this page:

    algotech.dk/googlesearches.asp

which trawls Googles indexes for any mentions of the domain name, backlinks or otherwise and I have found links from forums, Technorati, Reddit and others that don't show in Yahoo. Also Yahoo has listed two pages that have no relation to my site including a PDF file.

Your back links should show on the first page after signing in to your webmaster account in Google. Check the lower left corner of the page.

I just found out about Yahoo! Site Explorer about a week ago, it not only gives you a solid number but it shows you every site's URL that is linking back to you. Definitely recommend using it to keep track of backlinks.

Backlinks are really important because some search engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN, Bing etc. will give more credit to sites that have a good number of quality backlinks, and consider those websites more relevant than others in their results pages for a search query.
