Anyone, correct me if I'm wrong, but the indexing for the first time can take a little bit, I don't think there is anything wrong with nudging/letting google know that you are on the web (sitemap, webmaster tool). But from my understanding, you're crawled and indexed on your rankings to some extent too, so not only does a new website take longer, but also because you aren't going to zip to number 1 position right away, the next time google looks at you will be in a little bit too. Even in low competitive keywords it can take a bit. It took about 6 months for 3 of my keywords to reach number 1 in google and they have lower competition, I didn't use social media, article submissions or anything, just web content and wrote quality.
Google takes some time to index, it might be as long as 30 days, you can accelerate the process by running an Adwords campaign, or submitting your site to social bookmarking sites like Digg and Reddit
