When entering search string in Google, what do the numbers mean?

Im not sure if this question has been asked before, sorry if its a repeat.
When one begins to type a search string into Google SI, at list appears beneath apparently guessing and suggesting what it is you are searching for. Next to these "suggestions" are numbers which I understand indicate the number of searches made on that keyword. However, what I dont understand is what period of time these numbers reflect, is it daily, weekly, monthly?

Now you see, that is what is confusing me, because those figures dont tie up with Google Adwords Keyword tool. Why would there be a discrepancy? Anyone know and can possibly enlighten me?
Sorry to go on, but I am a numbers person and I need them to make some sense to me if I am going to depend on them for decision making and analysis.
