If your promotion methods are free, then the commission doesn't really matter, but of course, something more than $20 is better than 10 bucks or even less.
Personally $18 is my limit. It's not a lot of money, but for me, it's all about how easy it is to dominate keywords. If I write a few articles, dominate some of the keywords and make a sale a day, I'm not going to turn down that money. It's money. I think as you get into more competitive niches, you have to pay more.
Honestly for me it depends on alot of factors. 1.) Competing market - How much it is going to cost to effectively get a high CTR and result in sales. 2.) Keyword costs for SEM, as this has to be monitored with any campaign. 3.) Time involved in creating content. If the topic is one that i can write about without much research time involved that is much better than having to dig around and review information about the topic. 4.) Popularity of the niche that i am targeting and available competition sites for SEO. I mainly try to stick around 25-30 for a sale and i always let my campaigns bake for maximum effectiveness. You have to know that your sales can be repeatable and watch your advertising spend closely. Measure your ROI and even at competitive SEM niches you can still be profitable! I would need at least a 40% 50% ROI otherwise I wouldn't waste my time. I'm talking about 30-40 dollar products.
One of simpliest methods I use is if I am promoting via adwords I stop my ads when the adspend equals the commission if I get 1 sale or no sale. For example I was promoting a product recently, I got a sale after 10 hops at $.15 click = $1.50, but after 130 hops and no more sales and my ranked btween 3-8 on adwords and $20.00 spent I stopped the ad because the commisson was $22.67 so in the end I was $2.00 in profit. So for me $20.00, I do not promote anything that pays under 20 bucks commission
$40+ for one of the niches I am promoting at the moment as most of the better products are offering around $60. The rest of the niches must be at least $25
I'm looking for $30+ products , because it adds up quickly, I promote some 20-25$ as well. I guess the real way to evaluate how profitable a product is and how well it converts is to check how much do you earn per hop. I.E If you get a 50$ commission, and convert at 2%, You earn 100$ per 100 hops, divide 100$ by 100, you get 1$, meaning you earn 1$ per hop Or you have a product with 70$ commission converting at 1%, You would earn 0.7$ per hop, meaning the first example is more profitable
I think everyone targets expensive producs , but I have discussed with a friend of mine that has promoted cheap products for the last past year and sais they convert a lot better for him. I promote only 20$ +
it's interesting ... i probably wouldn't promote anythign less than $20 ... i think the advantage of the cheaper products is people are less resistant to parting with their cash
