Do you continue to build links or decide after a while the site will take care of itself once it has found its footing on the search engines. If your strtegy is to continually build links, how many do you go for and what methods do you use?
I am always building links. When/if i lose ground on one of my keywords, i become more aggressive with building links.
Depends on the site and what it's goals are. I own a few sites and one is mission critical, so I spend quite a bit of spare time adding content, checking for errors, things like that. I will still do link building, but not seek it out as much as before. I'm more concerned with content than new link partners, although both are worthwhile. One of the biggest challenges for me is trying to keep reciprocal links organized. In hindsight a directory might have been the best tool, but I place links in a variety of ways, trying to balance the needs of the link partner with the audience. I have always tried to put the site users needs first, and make the business and SEO decisions follow. Maybe this particular site is a rare case but I'm sure others have been thru this. I guess it's relevant to mention that the site I spoke about I began for enjoyment, not for cash. Sites that were strictly for making money would obviously be treated differently. Sometimes a site's goals can be in conflict with some of the tools we need to rank. I try to look for advertisers, link partners, etc that will be an asset to the site, not detract from it. Still we all have bills so we choose as necessary. I'm sure most of us have visited a site that is all about people trying to get your cash and those can be a turn-off.

I keep at it all the time. I believe content is most important so I spend most of my time writing. I try to get atleast 5 - 10 links per week
Writing and submitting articles to article directories can be a great way to build quality one way links rather efficiently by including your site details in your resource box. Obviously MSN will pick this up much quicker, but great results can still be obtained through google and yahoo. When building links you should follow an all around approach. Build 1 way links through article submissions Conduct Reciprocal links with similar quality websites And most important, build quality content that people want to link too. Also if you have the opportunity in your niche to build a viral tool that runs from your site, then this can greatly increase backlinks to your site as people will want to link to it.
Quality over time goes a long way compared to quantity in short periods. Look for good link partners, and try to add some good ones each month. At the same time, one of the most overlooked areas of SEO is site stickiness. Ask yourself: why would someone want to return to this site repeatedly. If you can't answer that question, then you are likely to be wasting your time building links.
Link building should be a continous process. I try to write one article a month and submit it to a bunch of article directories. Not only does this keep a "fresh link" at each article directory, but some of the articles get reprinted on other websites, helping me build links faster. I also pay attention to the New Directory forums like the one here on digitalpoint, dvduval's at phplinkdirectory.com and the forum at info.vilesilencer.com
This is following steps that is my strategy -Be newsworthy. -Get your customers to link to you. -Build a company blog. Make it a valuable, informative and entertaining resource. -Create content that inspires viral sharing and natural linking -Find directories or listings of relevant resources.
I think if people are serious in marketing their business/site, then they need to hire seo/marketing experts, often times they want to be cheap do it your self, then they end up making posts like the one on your blog.... "I spun some articles and submitted to some web 2.0 sites then did some bookmarking and my site dropped out the rankings" and with a post count less then then 10, then have become the worlds leading seo expert on how to make a business/site fail.... They can not tell you how to succeed because they are not experts, they can only tell you how they failed, and nothing works.... Why would anyone work on their own car when they know nothing about cars? You take your broke car to a shop right? Why try to do your own seo/marketing magic when you know absolutely nothing about seo/marketing? very good info....
You should never stop building backlinks, the more the better. Just make sure they're all quality and don't get spam backlinks.
Getting links from these websites is much like winning the local lottery when it comes to linkbuilding. Getting a link from one of these sites spells out a lot for you. It gives you high link juice and authority. But getting links from these sites are tough. In most cases, you need political connections. This link building strategy is a combination of hard work, determination and luck. Even so, you shouldn’t spend too much time and effort in getting a link from these sites. It can only go so far. Focus on where your specialty as an SEO specialist is – if it’s in creating great content, do that instead of trying to squeeze in your link in a .gov or .edu site.
