What strategies have you found to be the most effective? Is there a certain number you create per day or week, with different pr's? Is it possible to only link build and do nothing else I.E. article submissions, social bookmarking, etc. and still be just as effective? Is there a link building bible or book somewhere that offers this kind of advice? I look forward to hearing the responses!
Social Boomarking and directory listing is two methods I use to get backlinks. With directory listing should be directed on 500 - 1000 directories as not being in the list of all directories to submit. You should not have all Diretoria at the same time make it through over time and also avoid automatic submission tools such as search engines see this as a scam.
Strategy should be like .. focus on quality links instead of quantity links... i think it works better for all
actually I still used the old method. except I'm using them for Link Push and link wheel. Directory, Article, Social Bookmarking, social Networking, Blog Posting, Forum posting, blog comments, etc,.
I used link wheel to create back links to my website and other off page task. I specially concentrate on quality and relevant to theme based back links.
Agreed with all of these strategies... manual link building is time consuming but most effective. Submit to high profile directories, many cost $$$. Trade links with high PR sites relevant to your subject matter. Posting on forums and blogs such as this also is very good. If you can write article about your subject matter and submit to sites such as eHow 'how-to' sites it works very well. Maintain and post regularly on a blog that is integrated with your website, this can get many people to link to you if you have quality content that is not advertorial. Using social media is also a great way to get your blog and site seen though the links are usually nofollow, still gets people to see your stuff. Post on others facebook/twitter/g+ pages where you can. In all instances, maintain link etiquette so as not too seem a 'spammer.' This can hurt your reputation and cause you to lose many quality links!

Analyze your competitions link profile to see if you can get the same links. Directory submission, article submission, relevant manual blog commenting, social bookmarking and even forum profiles, then all those weak links need to be indexed, there are various methods to do that.
I focused on building backlinks with .EDU/.GOV/.AC, private blog networks and Web 2.0 properties. Sometimes I build links on articles, social bookmarks and press releases.
